Hinge Moments

Have you ever heard the term "hinge moment"? The term comes from a picture of a door on its hinges, opening and closing. The idea is that in each of our lives there are opportunities- open doors- that present themselves, and the resulting choice leads to several different outcomes as various events unfold. As I reflect on my own story, I can identify several life-altering choices that I have made. Some I regret and some I thank God for.

One of those hinge moments in my life occurred when I committed to becoming the kind of father to my children that wish my father was to me. It took a lot of grit to meet that commitment to myself because it seemed as though the forces of the universe were against me. I wish I knew then what I know now.
